The Truth about the Health Benefits of Green Tea
| Back |
Green tea seen as a cure-all remedy for many illnesses and conditions
Burnaby, BC - June 21, 2010 - In recent years, much has been written about the health benefits of green tea. But is green tea really a cure-all for everything from skin blemishes to cancer? One cup of green tea contains approximately 50mg of caffeine and 80-100mg of polyphenols which contain powerful antioxidant properties. The polyphenol content of green tea is higher than that of other teas because of its unique drying process.
At present, there is evidence to suggest that the green tea benefits may improve the following conditions:
- Anxiety
- Arthritis
- Asthma
- Cancer
- Colds
- Dental cavities
- Diabetes
- Heart problems
- High cholesterol
- Hypertension
- Infertility
- Menopausal symptoms
- Obesity (by assisting with weight loss)
- Skin damage (due to ultraviolet exposure)
- T-cell lymphocytic virus
According to the Mayo Foundation for Medication Education and Research, more studies are needed to confirm the green tea health benefits listed above. The existing evidence, however, does suggest that drinking a few cups of green tea daily is likely to have a positive effect on overall health. In addition, green tea has a long history of usage in Chinese and Japanese cultures that includes an axiom that says, "It is better to drink green tea than take medicine."
